For affordable tortoise housing in the UK, choose the enclosure by floor space first, then add lighting, a thermostat and thermometers so the setup is running before your tortoise arrives.[1][2] A hatchling needs about 1 m x 600 mm and a juvenile about 2 m x 600 mm, according to the Tortoise Protection Group (TPG).[2] Of the three PawHut houses compared below, only the largest reaches the hatchling figure, and none is sized for a juvenile or adult.[2] All three need assembling and link a PDF manual, and the listings in our tortoise houses category show free UK mainland delivery.[3] Before you order, check:
- Floor space: Compare the listed overall size with the TPG figures.
- Airflow: Choose a mesh roof or panel, not a sealed box.
- Lamp position: Look for a lamp holder or a roof that can take a lamp.
- Manual and delivery terms: Read both on the product page first.
Why Does Setting Up a First Tortoise Home Feel So Scattered?
A tortoise house is only one item on the list. The TPG says UVB has to be provided by artificial means indoors, and gives a hot spot of about 30°C at one end of the enclosure with a cooler end of about 20°C.[2] It also mentions thermometers, digital scales, a bathing container, a plant sprayer, disinfectant, supplements and a lamp stand as items to buy.[2]
The RSPCA’s advice for reptiles is to set the enclosure up and run it for at least a week before you collect the animal, with temperatures held steady for at least three days.[1]
Where a Starter Setup Can Go Wrong

- A sealed vivarium: The TPG says tortoises from arid environments do not do well long term in enclosed environments, and it mentions wooden or glass vivariums sold as part of starter kits.[2] The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) factsheet for Mediterranean tortoises says they should ideally be kept in well-ventilated open-top enclosures such as a floor pen or tortoise table.[4]
- Too little floor space: The RVC says as large an area as possible should be provided.[4] The TPG’s figures of about 1 m x 600 mm for a hatchling and 2 m x 600 mm for a juvenile show how floor space needs grow with the tortoise.[2]
- Heating from underneath: The TPG says heat mats, heat pads and heat rocks are not normally recommended for tortoises and can lead to thermal burns.[2]
- Relying on a small house outdoors: The Tortoise Table says small tortoise houses lack a heat supply, so a tortoise needs to be brought indoors in cooler weather, especially at night.[5]
What to Look For in a Starter Tortoise Enclosure
| What to look for | Why it matters | What to check on the product page |
| Floor space | A hatchling needs about 1 m x 600 mm and a juvenile about 2 m x 600 mm, says the TPG.[2] | Overall size and the run size, not only the length |
| Airflow | Open-top, well-ventilated enclosures are the RVC’s ideal.[4] | A mesh roof or mesh panel in the page’s own words |
| Heat and UVB | The TPG says a warm end and a cooler end are needed, with UVB provided artificially indoors.[2] | A lamp holder, or wording about using a heat or UV lamp |
| A hide | The TPG says a small hide at the cooler end gives a place to sleep.[2] | A private sleeping area |
| Cleaning | A tray or removable part makes cleaning easier. | Tray type and whether a house section lifts out |
| Manual and delivery | Our assembly guide says to check the listing for a downloadable manual.[6] | A linked manual, the delivery wording and the returns window |
How to Order a First Tortoise Setup in One Go
What to Order Alongside the House

- Heat and UVB lighting: A heat lamp and a UVB source, with a lamp stand if the house has no holder.[2]
- Thermometers: Reptile or digital in/out thermometers for the warm and cool ends.[2]
- Substrate: The TPG says sterilised topsoil is best for most species from arid environments.[2]
- A bathing container and a plant sprayer: The container should be non-see-through, and the sprayer keeps the substrate slightly moist.[2]
- Digital scales: Used for the tortoise only, to track weight in 1 g steps.[2]
- Disinfectant and supplements: A reptile disinfectant and a calcium and vitamin D supplement.[2]
A Short Order Before Your Tortoise Arrives
This order is our own rule of thumb, built on the guidance cited above.
- Choose by floor space: Compare each house’s overall and run sizes with the TPG’s figures.[2]
- Order the lighting and accessories with it: Then nothing holds up the setup while you wait for a late item.
- Read the manual first: Open the PDF on the product page before you order, then build the house.[6]
- Run it before collection: The RSPCA suggests at least a week, with temperatures steady for at least three days.[1]

The Most Floor Space: PawHut Three-Room Tortoise House[7]

The PawHut Three-Room Tortoise House (D40-024V01GY) suits the floor-space check because it is the largest of the three, with a run cage the page lists at 108 x 61 cm.[7]
- Size and features: It measures 112 x 65 x 59 cm overall and weighs 14 kg. It has a sleeping area, a balcony reached by a ladder, a run cage, an openable mesh roof on each section and a plastic tray. The page lists lockable doors and indoor and outdoor use.
- Best suited to: Owners of a hatchling or small young tortoise who want the most floor space of the three.
- Pros: The run cage is a little larger than the TPG’s hatchling figure of about 1 m x 600 mm, and the mesh roofs allow airflow.[2]
- Limitations: No lamp holder is listed, and the page gives no tortoise size, age or species limit.
- Choose another option if: You want a lamp holder built in, or the lowest price.
- Price and delivery: It costs £107.99 at time of writing, with free UK mainland delivery. Contact us within 30 calendar days of delivery to return it.[7]
A Built-In Lamp Holder: PawHut Lamp Holder Tortoise Enclosure

The PawHut Lamp Holder Tortoise Enclosure (D40-034V00GY) suits the lamp-position check because the page lists an adjustable lamp holder, and mesh wire for air circulation.[8]
- Size and features: It measures 102 x 56 x 104 cm overall without the lamp holder and weighs 15.5 kg. The run box is 95 x 48.5 cm inside, and the main house inside is 26 x 44 cm. It has an openable lid, a ramp, a bottom shelf for food and a removable main house.
- Best suited to: Owners who want a lamp position built in and a removable main house, after checking the 95 x 48.5 cm run against the TPG figures.[2]
- Pros: The lamp holder adjusts across an 80 to 100 cm height range, and the removable main house makes cleaning easier.
- Limitations: The run box is narrower than the TPG’s 600 mm hatchling figure, the plastic tray is fixed, and the lamp is not included.[2] The page mentions lighting and temperature but not UVB.[8]
- Choose another option if: You want a wider run, or the lowest price.
- Price and delivery: It costs £99.99 at time of writing, with free UK mainland delivery. Contact us within 30 calendar days of delivery to return it.[8]
The Lowest Price: PawHut Mesh Roof Tortoise House

The PawHut Mesh Roof Tortoise House (D40-012V00BU) is the one to look at if price matters most, because it is the least expensive of the three and has mesh roofs for airflow.[9]
- Size and features: It measures 91 x 60.5 x 32 cm overall and weighs 7.5 kg. It has a private resting section, an open section and three large windows. The page says the side panels pull out to make the living space bigger, and that UV and heat lamps can be used with it.
- Best suited to: Owners who want the lowest price and the lightest house. In our view, its small run suits a shelter or a short-term home for a very small tortoise at most, and the page gives no age or size limit.
- Pros: It is the lightest of the three, and the pull-out side panels extend the space.
- Limitations: The run cage is listed at 57 x 56 cm, smaller than the other two, and no lamp holder or tray is listed. The page describes it for small pets such as turtles, lizards, geckos and snakes, and names Russian tortoises.
- Choose another option if: You want more floor space, or a lamp holder built in.
- Price and delivery: It costs £54.99 at time of writing, with free UK mainland delivery. Contact us within 30 calendar days of delivery to return it.[9]
Who This Suits, and Who It Does Not
It suits you if:
- You are buying a hatchling or small young tortoise, have checked the run size against the TPG figures, and want housing, lighting and accessories ordered together.
- You want a house with a mesh roof or panel for airflow rather than a sealed box.
- You are happy to read a manual and build the house yourself.
It does not suit you if:
- Your tortoise is a juvenile or adult. The TPG gives about 2 m x 600 mm for juveniles, which is longer than any of the three houses, and the RVC says as large an area as possible should be provided.[2][4]
- You plan to keep your tortoise outdoors through the season. The TPG says the best place for a tortoise is outdoors, and that hatchlings can be outdoors in warmer weather with shade, shelter and a totally secure enclosure. In our view, a house is shelter rather than the whole enclosure.[10]
- Your species has different needs. The TPG refers readers to species care sheets for details.[10]
Recommendation
For a first tortoise, choose the house for the job and order the lighting with it. In our view, the PawHut Three-Room Tortoise House suits an owner who wants the most floor space, as the only one of the three whose run reaches the TPG hatchling figure, the PawHut Lamp Holder Tortoise.
FAQs
1. Is a wooden tortoise house enough for a pet tortoise?
No, a house is a shelter and a sleeping area, not the whole setup. The TPG says UVB has to be provided artificially indoors and that a warm end and a cooler end are needed, so the lighting and thermometers are part of the setup.[2]
2. Can a tortoise live outdoors in the UK?
Partly, in the right weather. The TPG says the best place for a tortoise is outdoors, and that hatchlings can be outdoors in warmer weather provided they have shade, shelter and a totally secure enclosure.[10] The Tortoise Table says a tortoise in a small house needs to come indoors in cooler weather.[5]
3. Does a tortoise house come with a heat lamp?
